Question: Where are the best places to hire great employees? What’s your process?

Answer: Luckily for me in heading a social media agency, I’m seen as a thought leader in the space and therefore I’m at a point in my career where great hires are coming to me. However, speaking more practically, I would suggest to those looking to hire “great” people to start utilizing tactics such as using Twitter Search. Conversations are being had all over the world about every subject there is. Start searching for people talking about the areas of work you’re looking to hire in. If you’re smart about it, you can easily whittle down your search based on both subject and location. The truth is, and consequently the problem, is that people are lazy and aren’t willing to put in the effort.

  1. There are a few sound bites that I loved like "..and then do the homework" and "everyone is looking for quick tactics" and "putting in the work always matters". While people are quoting the 8 hours as a whole it's more realistic to take that as an example of the type of work it takes to land quality candidates – you (or someone you hire) has to put in the work – daily. My recruitment business (PerformanceMarketingJOBS) puts in 12 hours a day and that's is what is needed to supply entrepreneurial focused companies with the best candidates – not the best available, the best out there. Another key to success is having someone who knows what it takes to be successful in the position do the recruiting. Daily tasks and responsibilities don't mean much if the candidate can't accomplish the end goal.

Expanding on What Gary said, if you're looking for people in the technology space(Engineers, QA, etc), networking at meetups and user groups, wouldn't be a bad way to go.  Some groups will have an announcements part of the meeting where you can say hey my company is looking for people to do x(x should be relevant to the meeting). The benefit of people at meetups/usergroups are they are giving up some of their free time to learn more, a good quality to have in any Employee, someone who is always learning more.  This may apply to other professions as well, but your milage may vary.
